The name Meteora is taken from the celestial word meteorite, which means “Suspended in the Air.” What makes this place so extraordinary are the sacred monasteries that are “suspended in the air;” having been built on very tall columns of rock, which makes for some of the most inaccessible land on the planet, especially for a place of worship! It is the second-largest monastery complex in Greece, next to Mount Athos.
