“It was important to me to individualize these animals because the numbers are so astronomical. It’s just unimaginable numbers. It was very important to me to also include these ambassadors of their species, where you can look them in the eye, and see them as individuals, and recognize that they’re individuals just like humans.”

Ms. La Rocca González explains the connection between the animal-people-raising industry and issues such as worker exploitation, environmental devastation, and colonialism. “There’s no way that you could exploit these sentient beings without affecting everything around it. On an ethical or spiritual level, consuming this much fear cannot be healthy for a human. The indigenous Americans had a very advanced system of agriculture, which was much more in harmony with nature than the industrialized systems that are currently in place. This industry affects all of us every single day.”

“Number one is the amount of land necessary. Beef is a big one, but every single species that is exploited by this industry is much worse for the environment than a plant-based food – exponentially. Scientists have now done studies to show that a whole foods plant-based diet is really the healthiest way to eat. It’s the easiest, quickest way for every single person to make a big difference environmentally.”

“I’m an artist and photographer, so this was the contribution that I felt most able to make. Then, time permitting, economics permitting, to do whatever you can to push those in power to make a change as soon as possible, to stop this just horribly cruel and unethical and poisonous industry.”
