Lao Tzu, whose name literally means “the Elderly Master,” was born during the Spring and Autumn Period in the 6th century BC, beginning life in the ancient Chinese State of Chu during the Zhou Dynasty. His original name was Li Erh, and He later became known as the historian and astrologer Lao Dan.

According to written history, Lao Tzu held the esteemed position as curator of the Royal Library. He was highly regarded for His profound wisdom and knowledge. Even the Great Master Confucius once consulted Him about the essence of li, or rituals, and marveled that Lao Tzu’s wisdom was immeasurable, like a dragon who can soar into the sky with the wind and clouds.

Lao Tzu had practiced perfectly on the Spiritual Way, and the essence of His philosophy stemmed from seclusion and anonymity. Legend has it that when Lao Tzu was about to exit the country via the Hangu Pass, He encountered a gatekeeper who perceived Lao Tzu’s extraordinary spiritual aura. Before letting the Master pass, the gatekeeper insisted that He write down some teachings for the world. This text became the Tao Te Ching, which went on to be one of China's most important philosophical and spiritual scriptures. The Taoism religion emerged from His teachings, and Lao Tzu was subsequently regarded as the founder of Taoism as well as the God “Tai Shang Lao Jun” (the Grand Supreme Elderly Lord) from Taoist legends.

Supreme Master Ching Hai further explained Lao Tzu’s teachings during a 2008 lecture in France.

Lao Tzu said that, “this kind of person will constantly retain the excellence of his nature all the time. He became the child again, free from all flaws, from all stains. This is a man, a woman, who has attained the Tao.”

Yes, who has been enlightened. So with this essay, Lao Tzu wanted to tell His disciples how to act, how to behave, how to distinguish a person who has attained the Tao. He will look like this; very strong, very powerful, very wise, yet very simple, very humble, very ordinary. So He advised His disciples, first to carry out their life on the planet, as long as they live here. Not just physical strength but even spiritual strength; you know it but you don’t boast about it because the man, after he attains enlightenment, for him, it’s simple like breathing, it will not feel like, “Oh, it’s great I attain the Tao, I am now the Buddha.” No, he doesn’t feel that way, she won’t feel that way. It’s very simple and natural to them anyway. But people will know it and they all will flock to him. “All beneath the sky,” that means all beings because He’s already one with all of them. So they feel no distance from this kind of Being. Not just humans but animals also. That’s why He said, “All beneath the sky.” He doesn’t say humans will flock to him or her, He said, “All beneath the sky” will come to this person, because He has become a child again, simple, free and pure.
