Brad Cohen first begins to show symptoms of Tourette syndrome when he is about six years old. From that point on, he becomes the target of mocking and bullying by some of his classmates. Fortunately, Brad’s mother, Ellen, is a steadfast source of support. She spends countless hours researching in the library and at home until she comes across a medical book that describes Tourette syndrome. One day during a middle school class, Brad is sent to the principal’s office after being unable to control his tics. Through this act of empathy and understanding, Principal Myer opens a door to a brighter future for Brad. In that pivotal moment, Brad discovers his life’s calling. He resolves to become a teacher – one who not only imparts knowledge but also fosters hope, respect, and understanding in his students, just as Principal Myer did for him.

Directed by Peter Werner and written by Thomas Rickman, the heartwarming and inspiring 2008 docudrama “Front of the Class” has touched millions of hearts. In real life, Brad Cohen co-authored Front of the Class: How Tourette Syndrome Made Me the Teacher I never Had with Lisa Wysocky in 2005, inspiring others with similar conditions. The book, which won the Education Book of the Year award, later became the foundation for this remarkable film. Brad also founded The Brad Cohen Tourette Foundation, dedicated to supporting and encouraging children with Tourette’s syndrome, ensuring they know they are not alone. “Front of the Class” celebrates the resilience of the human spirit, delivering a powerful message about perseverance, acceptance, and the transformative power of education. Brad Cohen’s journey is a testament to how determination and self-belief can overcome adversity.
